Hamilton Pool

Hamilton Pool

Simply stated, this is one of the most spectacular swimming holes in all of the Hill Country and it consistently makes it on to all of the top ten lists. The site features a 50’ waterfall (no diving since the county took over the property, dagblastit) and a gigantic, picturesque collapsed grotto. Cultural artifacts dating over 8,000 years have been found in the area. Not the easiest place to get to (considering the walk from the parking lot down the steep path), but this is a spot not to be missed. Be sure to call first to check on water quality because those knuckleheads doing the nearby development and construction do not always take proper precautions to keep sediment out of the creek that forms the waterfall. You also will need to make a reservation to visit the park between May 15th and September 30th — no kidding.  When the water in the creek is flowing and there are no water quality concerns this is an excellent destination.  This also is a great place to go for a hike, but bring plenty of water during the warm weather months.  If you come out here for a hike, you should consider heading to the left when you get to where there is a T in the trail at the bottom of the hill.  Going to the right takes you to the pool and going to the left takes you to the river. This is another place where you have to make a reservation to attend or there is a real good chance you will not get in. Hamilton Pool is approximately 30 miles southwest of Austin. Take Highway 71 west of Austin through the town of Bee Cave and turn left onto FM 3238 (Hamilton Pool Road). There are no life guards on duty so swim at your own risk.
