Government Canyon State Natural Area

government canyon 2The primary activities available to the outdoor enthusiast at this 8,622-acre natural area are hiking and nature viewing. Dogs are OK if kept on a leash and we are happy to announce they now allow primitive camping, but only on the weekends. There are several nice scenic overlooks, a nice stand of oak trees covered in Spanish moss and we have heard a band of gnomes lives in the park. You also can do some mountain biking or look at the dino tracks while you are here. Afterwards you could drive over to Medina Lake or Guadalupe River State Park if you wanted to get in some water recreation time. Be sure to check their events schedule regularly because they often offer guided hikes and other programs here.  One other thing, they have dinosaur tracks out there. To get to the natural area, take State Road 471 west from Loop 1604 and turn right and the park is on Galm Rd whatever the heck a galm is.
