Boerne-Comfort-Bandera Loop

Activities Available:

This is a swell little drive through some really pretty countryside that will take you to several noteworthy places. If you want to get an idea of paddle trips that are available in this area, talk to the folks at Texas Kayak in Boerne and there are a couple of outfitters in Bandera as well (Bandera Beach Club, Bandera Kayak and Tube, Medina River Company). Unfortunately, we will start this trip by heading north on, ugh, IH-10 from Boerne. ·Take the Welfare exit, which also might be marked as State Road 289.·You will pass Po Po’s restaurant and will want to be on the Waring-Welfare Road. You soon will pass by the Nelson City Dance Hall, which is a great place to go scuff up your boots. ·Stay on the Waring-Welfare Road and you will pass by the Welfare Cafe, which serves delicious food in what once was a general store. Check out the outdoor seating area. ·This should take you up to the Waring General Store where you really should get out and take a look see around the place and ask about the upcoming music lineup. They have an inside and outside venue for musical acts and you should also ask them about the Wednesday night cook your own steak event. They also should be able to set you up with a kayak rental if needed. ·Grab a Mexican Coca Cola for the road and head east on 1621/Waring-Welfare Road and you will come out onto 473 where you will turn left (west) and head over to Comfort.·After you cross under the interstate you will come into Comfort (home of Free Thinkers) so look for the signs that will direct you to the old part of town (altstadt), which is most assuredly worth a visit. ·Go find the ruins of the Ingenhuett Store (one of the many Hill Country structures designed by Alfred Giles) and pay your respects to what up until recently had been one of if not the oldest continually operated general stores in the Hill Country. Tragic loss due to fire, but we think you can still come out and watch the locals have their domino game in from of the store on Friday evenings if the weather permits. Also, be sure to come out to Comfort during October for the annual Scarecrow Invasion. ·Take 27 west to Center Point (where you can always take a dip in the river at Lion’s Park). ·From Center Point, turn left (south) on 480 to the Camp Verde Store. Not as old as the Ingenhuett Store but definitely worth a stop and especially so if you have time to hang out on their patio. Go ahead, ask them about the camels if you do not know the story. They have told it millions of times, but they would be glad to tell it again. ·From Camp Verde turn left (south) onto 173, which will take you to Bandera (lots to do here if you want to go for a swim, talk to the kayak outfitters, or go to one of the cowboy bars).·When you are through cowboying it up in Bandera take 16 east to Pipe Creek.·After you have left Pipe Creek behind, you will turn left onto 46 and back to Boerne (Dodging Duck is available if you desire a cerveza).
