Barton Creek Greenbelt

greenbeltMiles of trails are available for hiking and mountain biking in one of Austin’s favorite locations known by the locals as simply the greenbelt. If you are taking the bike out be sure to contact the Austin Parks and Recreation Department to get information because the trails range from relatively flat to pretty technical in spots. During wet periods, the creek has a number of swimming holes available that the locals most certainly will put to use. However, if you are looking for a place to swim during the warm months it is best to contact the Austin Parks and Recreation Department because there are times when the creek is either very stagnant or dry as a bone. When the water is flowing, you can even take the yaks down the creek, but there are portions that can be tricky if you don’t have a lot of experience paddling in moving water with rocks all around you. Certain areas along the greenbelt offer you climbing opportunities as well. There are numerous points of entry for the trails, but the easiest to locate is at the south end of the Barton Springs Pool parking lot at the main entrance of the pool. Go by the pool and they will be able to help you out with other trailhead locations.
