This is a large, shaded campground popular with motorcycle enthusiasts among others and it is located on the other side of the river from beautiful limestone cliffs and hills. The campsite is on River Road between the 2nd and 3rd crossings of the gorgeous Guadalupe River outside of New Braunfels and upstream from dam number 5, also known as the chute, making this a great place to go tubing. As is the case with practically all of the campgrounds on River Road, you need to get here early to snag one of the choice campsites under the trees and next to the water. If you get here early enough you might be able to get one of those campsites down by the river that is away from the roads and the parking area. You should know, however, that it can get very crowded here during high season so plan your trip accordingly. Also, just like all of the other sites on River Road the campsites here are pretty close together so you should consider taking more campsites than you actually need to give you a little more privacy. In fact, your best bet might be to come out a day early to beat the weekend crowds and to increase the chances of being able to snag a really good spot. Tubes, rafts and kayaks are available for rent and you can do some swimming here as well. Ask whether trout have been stocked recently by the TPWD. There is a bar and grill located onsite as well as a nice deck that overlooks the river. With all the amenities offered, this is one of the better places to go do drive up camping, but it won’t be anything like going to a remote area out in the wilderness — just sayin. This site is more about tubing than it is camping, but if you are looking to go camping in the off season you could do a lot worse than staying here. RV sites and small cabins also are available if you don’t feel like tent camping. Finally, this is a fun stretch of the river to paddle but be sure to do so only when the flows are at least 1,200 cfs because then there won’t be any tubes on the water.
