This recently created gorge, at least in geologic time, was etched out of the landscape by tremendous amounts of water billowing over the spillway in 2002, which was the first time since that had happened since the dam was constructed. This is a very impressive feature and it serves as a reminder of just how powerful flowing water can be as it cuts through soil down to the bedrock under certain conditions. Check with the Gorge Committee folks at GBRA about the possibility of taking a guided tour. You can see the gorge from the road if you head south on 306 from Canyon Lake Acres heading towards the dam and then turn right onto South Access Rd.
