This is a very nice campground located on the fabulous spring-fed, crystal clear Nueces River in the sprawling Nueces Canyon and it offers oak tree-shaded camping, swimming, fishing and tubing opportunities. One of the best things about this location is that the campsites are either right on or very close to the beautiful river (when the water is up that is). There are not very many campsites that are right on the water so be sure to get here early to grab them up. One benefit is they do take online reservations so you can make sure there will be a campsite available when you get there. This is really a nice part of the Hill Country as is the adjacent Frio River Basin when the streams are flowing and the entire area is a fabulous destination when you are wanting to get away from the oppressively hot weather in the summer. This can be a great place to go tubing because there will not be nearly as many people here as there are on the Frio, Comal, San Marcos or Lower Guadalupe. However, be sure to check on the water conditions here during the warm weather season before heading out because it can get dry — and we mean dry. The campground is located on Hwy 55 about 5 miles south of Camp Wood and there is a store onsite. They also have some one and two bedroom cabins and some RV sites available for your use. Non-aggressive dogs are ok if kept on a leash. They can give you some information about various put in and take out points on the river if you are wanting to bring the kayaks with you to go paddling in this pretty little river valley. If you need to rent a boat, contact the folks over at Clear Creek Outfitters.
